Took the R-class up a very steep and washed out forest service road for some mountain biking. Lots of fist sized rocks, deep ruts, and deep potholes. It didn’t care and was still super comfortable. When we left and headed back down I think I was driving faster than most Prius drivers do on the freeway. Had some nice mountain views from the trail too.
Mt. Adams in the background of pic 2. Captions on kinja mobile are... Difficult sometimes.

I challenge you to a forest service road race.
Also, no clip less pedals ?

Hmm... Tempting... No bikes on back though. Which ride would you be taking?
No. I can position my feet just fine and keep them there without thank you very much. Never ridden clipless and have no interest in doing so. Planting a foot a kicking the tail around a switchback is good fun, clips might ruin that!

Riding without clips feels like driving without a seatbelt or leaving home without undies. It just feels... weird.

Wow that is a long travel hard tail. I wonder that rides like.

Probably a blast. The blue one is a steel frame with 160mm travel, but I have not ridden it . The orange Santa Cruz is super fun, and has 140 or 150.

How’s the wobble on that rack? Was it banging around as you traveled up the trail? Does it have a second secure point on the roof rack?

Yeah the blue one was the one I was looking at. I went and looked it up. Super slack for a hardtail. I’m sure it’s a blast but it seems a bit...unbalanced maybe? If you need that much travel for the front I’m starting to think you might need a shock in the rear.

Mt. Hood is the most picturesque mountain I’ve ever seen. Has that platonic mountain shape, and is pretty well isolated from the rest of the Cascade range.
Fly to Portland, we’ll get you there! Or we can just find a nice rooftop bar and drink and stare at it (you can see it quite easily from most places in Portland if you’re up a few stories off the ground, or over in the west hills).

No wobble or noise at all. It fits together perfectly. And the hitch bolt you get with it clamps and locks it together nicely. No upper attachment point, but it isn't necessary the way it's built. Pivots down so I can open the tailgate too.

Super aggressive hardtail are getting popular. He was pretty fast on it. I think it's about as big as you'd want to go

The last time I biked was back before 29ers were a thing (God I miss the Sun Valley trails) but I remember that last month switching to clipless.... It was magical.

The one that runs. Volvo has been perms-neglected since purchase
Fair point, but having that pedal power on the up stroke is a gamec hanger

ooh, we should definitely ride sometime then. IMO, clips are where it’s at. i like knowing that when i jump sideways or bunny hop, the bike follows. then again, i can usually hold a track stand for a solid minute or two if needed.

Oh that’s too bad.
Proper foot position on good flats can get you almost the same result. I suck at climbing anyways, so not sure it would make a difference for me.

I wish there was time for a ride during the Whistler trip! It would be awesome to get a free of us together. But I assume you’re still not coming?
I can do those things with flats. I think too many people use clips as a crutch. I think if you learn on flats and learn proper form that way clips are fine, if that’s your thing, but a lot of people jump in from road bikes already knowing how to ride clipless but not how to jump. To each their own though!

Yes, I’ve been riding for a while but i don’t doubt that i could learn a few things, especially in the full squish game.
